Back from the grave! Kind of

Why hello everyone! It’s been a minute! If you’re still getting this, thanks for sticking around.

We sincerely apologize for taking an impromptu extended hiatus with no warning that it was happening/when we’d be coming back. We both got caught up living life (Jane is still deep in law school final hell) but I (Lizzy) was *just feeling it Mr Krabs* and decided to make a spontaneous comeback. I have no idea if we’ll keep writing these, how often, etc but I honestly think I just saw enough funny tweets this week that I thought people would appreciate. So here we are.

TELEVISION

Yes, I’m still on my anime grind (for those interested, I’m watching Soul Eater and Assassination Classroom S2), but you’ll be happy to know that’s not all I’ve been watching! Here are some highlights from the last few weeks + my takes:

Insecure, Season 5 – HBO. It’s been really fun watching this season with my mom! I still think it has one of the best written female friendships on television.
Succession – HBO. I binged the last two seasons all at once, so maybe watching it week by week is slowing down the pace, but I’m not loving this season as much as the others. There are been some great moments of dialogue between the characters, but I’m still waiting for some classic Succession twists.
Community – Netflix. Brody and I started this together for a post-work, half pay attention wind down show. It took me a little while to get into it, but it’s fun and light for what it is. (Some people really love this show, so if that’s you, lmk!)

One of my favorite shows I watched recently that I would recommend if you like adult animated shows: Inside Job – Netflix.

The show is about Cognito Inc., a secret government agency that manufactures the world’s conspiracy theories. I like to complain that women are rarely portrayed as innate ‘geniuses’ in pop culture (think Tony Stark, Rick Sanchez, Sheldon Cooper, Dr. House, Reid from Criminal Minds, Mike from Suits, etc, the list goes on) but in this case the main character of this show is a genius woman (Reagan Ridley, voiced by Lizzy Caplan aka Janice Ian) who is really smart and good at her job and wants to be in charge but is also dealing with issues from being raised by a shitty father and can’t connect with people in the same way her average White male co-worker Brett can. Anyway show is fun and cheeky and I want there to be a season 2.

FILM

I don’t watch a lot of movies these days, but some recent-ish highlights:

Amanda Knox – Netflix. If you recognize the name Amanda Knox but don’t quite remember the details of her case, or even if you do remember, watch this doc. Infuriating but a good look at what happened.
- We also watched Stillwater, which is loosely based off Amanda Knox’s story. I didn’t really understand what I was supposed to get from the movie.
Dune – HBO. Brody and I spent the first ~45 min of these movies trying to figure out wtf was happening, but after sitting through all 2.5 hours, I’m honestly kind of into it and ready to watch the next one.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - Disney+. I’ll watch anything Marvel makes, but I watched this again recently and it’s just so great. Simu Liu is also really fun to follow on social media.

PODCASTS

I thought this was fascinating. After listening, and after the verdict of the Kyle Rittenhouse case, I’m honestly even more surprised that those men were found guilty.
